May Round-up

May Round-up

11 May 2022

By the time that this magazine is published the Purton Cricket Club season will have begun. As usual we start with a couple of friendly matches to get the teams warmed up for the rigours of the matches to come. Our First and Second Eleven will be the first to be in action at the ground and you can expect one or other of them to be playing on Saturday, weather permitting. Sundays are usually the preserve of our junior and youth teams with Under 11s, Under 13s and Under 15s hosting their home games in the morning and afternoons.

Our Midweek team are in the first division of four Swindon Midweek Leagues and usually play around 10 to 12 league games a season, all on a Thursday evening from 6pm to roughly 9pm. This is often followed by socializing at the pub afterwards. Other teams include the likes of Swindon and NALGO, who also have established Saturday league cricket sides, as well as local Swindon social clubs. For the last few seasons Purton have finished around mid-table, but we do have ambitions to win the league this season. We have training once a week with the other adult teams of Purton CC on a Wednesday evening. There is also the option to play weekend cricket for either the 1st or 2nd XI. We are always looking for good quality players to help improve the standard of our midweek team so if you are interested then please contact membership.purtoncc@gmail.com

Purton is also pleased to be able to offer the ground to Wiltshire County Cricket throughout the season. Practice matches and county games are typically played during the week, starting in the mornings. The Wiltshire Under 12 boys share a coach with one of our own coaches and will be using our facilities several times this year.

In the evenings our members usually train on the ground or in the nets with our compliment of ECB qualified coaches. If you visit on a Friday evening, when the younger cricketers train, you will not only find a great buzz about the place but also a café selling hot and cold drinks and cakes. The funds raised go towards running the club, which being a solely volunteer-based organisation is always looking for support.

Indeed, we have had support from local firms already who have provided us with practical help. Other companies have recognised that the club has hundreds of visitors throughout the season and have provided sponsorship in return for advertising at the ground and on the club shirts. If you would like to benefit from your name and logo being seen at the ground, then please contact: chair.purtoncc@gmail.com

Last year we received some grants provided by the ECB in order that we could provide a more welcoming environment and offer cricket throughout the summer to the All-Stars (5–8-year-olds) and Dynamos (8–11-year-olds). This will enable us to repair some of the structures at the ground which are starting to feel their age and buy some much needed kit for the youngsters.
